Methodology

How this profile is built

For European cohort cities, all figures come from Eurostat Urban Audit archives β€” each chart cites the dataset (urb_*) and indicator code (e.g. DE1001V) so the underlying value is traceable. For non-EU cities (Seoul, Singapore, Dubai, New York, Buenos Aires, Cape Town) figures are sourced from each municipality's open-data portal β€” see the source badge at the top of this profile for the live link.

Pulse shields and percentile scores are computed by ranking this city against the other 13 in our cohort on a representative indicator per category β€” cars per 1,000 (lower better), museum visitors per 1,000, waste per capita (lower better), unemployed per 1,000 (lower better), higher-education attainment share, road deaths per 100k (lower better). Coverage is the share of curated indicators populated for the city.

Caveats:

  • TΓΌrkiye stopped reporting around 2004 so Ankara, Istanbul, and Izmir profiles end there.
  • City core, not metro area β€” Eurostat's "city" is the administrative core (XX001C), not the broader functional urban area.
  • Sparse indicators show empty states rather than fabricated numbers.
